She thought, then shook her head. “Maybe, for a little while. But how do we explain why without making him feel bad?”

Will stared at her. “None of this is his fault, but you’re right. Kylie and Sandra will just have to handle it the best they can.” His look turned pleading. “Will you make sure he understands that I didn’t know, either? I wouldn’t have turned my back on him, Zoe, I swear. You don’t have any reason to believe that, but I would like to think that I would have done the right thing.”

Whatever his faults, Will Branch had always had a good heart. “I believe you. And I’m sorry that—”

He shook his head. “We can’t go back. What happened, happened, but if we dwell on it, I’ll go crazy. Tanner robbed me of too much.” A muscle jumped in his jaw. He shook his head again, harder. “I can’t.” He looked at her. “You shouldn’t, either. We’re here now, and Sam is alive and healthy. We proceed from this point. Agreed?”

She nodded. There was a whole lot she didn’t know about this new Will Branch, but so far, what she’d learned was promising.

Still, she wouldn’t project too far or get her hopes up too high.

But she would give him a chance.

And be careful, in the process. “Agreed.” She stuck out a hand.

Will took it and slowly drew her to him. Kissed the socks off her before she could protest. Even if she’d wanted to.

Then stepped back. “But I can do more than one thing at a time, honey. And you are on my radar screen, don’t you forget it.”

Flustered, flattered…altogether unsettled, Zoe escaped him as quickly as she could.

Before she went back for seconds and made a liar of herself.
